Are There Limits to What Shrink Wraps Can Cover?

What are shrink wraps?

Whenever you enter the refrigerated section at a market, it’s no surprise to see your choice of pizza or veggies wrapped in transparent plastic. Same at the beverage aisle, you might have added packed sodas into your cart without wondering how the cans manage to stay together.
The plastic sheets that cover the items are known as shrink wraps or shrink films. As predictable from its name, these materials contract when heat is applied and are mostly made of polymer plastic. One of its many benefits is that it sticks tightly to whatever it is covering regardless of how the item is shaped.
The so called shrink packaging however is not limited to frozen food and beverages. In fact, it is widely sought in various industries ranging from consumer to shipping and even logistics since operators can leverage the level of transparency, width and strength depending on what is wrapped. For instance, shampoos or syrups use what are called shrink sleeves that are attached in the same way with shrink wraps but are pre-processed to include all information on the cover.

Now we have an understanding of what shrink wraps are. But how far can it go in terms of what it covers?

The Usability of Shrink Wraps in a Larger Scale

We have mentioned that shrink packaging is used widely in various industries. Subjects can start from the tiniest tomato and stretch further out to large cars, boats and even helicopters. While the convenience of using only heat to cover is attractive already, shrink wraps also provide protection from outer substances like dust and water, which is quite critical for machineries.

To jump a little into our own story: shrink wraps are also used to prepare the LG Centrifugal Chillers for shipping.
Wait. What are Centrifugal chillers exactly? To make long story short, they are large capacity coolers that help expansive facilities like hospitals or office buildings maintain consistent temperature all year long. Especially for LG Centrifugal Chillers, they are loved by consumers for being ecofriendly and for increasing energy savings.

How then are these mega-coolers wrapped?

Steps of Wrapping the LG Centrifugal Chiller

The procedure is quite simple.
[Step one.] First prepare a shrink film large enough to cover the LG Centrifugal Chiller.

[Step two.] Once the preparation is ready, cover the LG Centrifugal Chiller from bottom to top. Due to its size, the bottom portion is usually covered manually while the top portion is done so using a crane.

[Step three.] Once all sided are fully covered with shrink films, all there is left is to apply heat! Depending on the size, either a shrink gun or a shrink tunnel is used. For the LG Centrifugal Chiller, all operations are done by hand!

Done! Just in three steps the chillers are good to go.
Ever knew a large item can be wrapped so easily?
